We are from China and now live in UK and just had a baby girl. We prefer a name which is good in both English and Chinese (same pronunciation, both good meaning etc). This seems to be extremely hard though. And we decide it's better to have a Chinese name which also can be easily pronounced in English and also sounds good and no bad/funny meaning.
Here is a list we have and some comments:
茗 (Ming): means fine tea in Chinese.
岚 (Lan): means mist in hills in Chinese.
or 兰 (Lan): means orchid.
What do you think?

Congratulations! From your list, I feel most drawn to Lan with the meaning "mist in hills". To my English eyes, the symbol for this name resembles a castle, which fits quite well into the mental picture of hills and mist.

Lan sounds beautiful and I love its meanings. Unfortunately, I don't think Ming works as well as Lan in England because it reminds me of this slang word http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/minging

This was my first thought as well, but I wasn't sure how often minging was used in the US.

I am sure most any name in Chinese is pleasant enough, meaning-wise. I assume you are asking what name is the best sounding in English, to English speakers. I think the most comfortable Chinese names in English are Lin, Tai, Mei, and Zan. Li, Jin, and Jian are almost as easy. Ming and Lan are okay, and sound more "foreign" - more suggestive of having been born in China, I guess is what I mean. That is not a bad thing, of course, it just seems like it might be of interest to you.

I think both names are beautiful, but I like Lan a bit better.
Both meanings of Lan are gorgeous. But I personally prefer the one with "mist in the hills", also because the symbol looks nicer to me.

The characters don't show on my screan, but I like Lan with the meaning mist in hills. That imagery is just so gorgeous!
