I don't see why not. For a lot of female names you'll see that they are feminine versions of male names. In this case the meaning was originally for the name Charles, so I'd take the meaning as being "free person". As the male name was probably in use first of course the meaning is going to use the term "man".
Personally I think being turned off a name for the word "man" in the meaning is a bit silly when it means the same thing when you replace it with the word "woman" or "person".*~Loads of Randomness~*
