So I've been posting a few really bad names I've encountered at my job here and there, and I've encountered some more to share with you! Yay!
A couple days ago I was speaking with a student (over the phone) whose name was pronounced MAD-uh-lee. Thinking it was something similar to Madeleine, I kept picturing "Madelie / Madalie" in my head. However, when I asked, she spelled her name:
M. A. D. L. Y.
Madly. Pronounced "MAD-uh-lee," but spelled frickin'
Madly.
Thing is, I remember looking at her file, which included a middle name, and thinking her middle name was really pretty. But her parents named her Madly. I don't understand.
Then today, I encountered two more eyebrow-raisers. One was a student whose name I *thought* was Danielle, but when I kept searching for her in the system no results came up, so I verified that I had the correct spelling. Turns out her name was spelled
Danelle... but pronounced like Danielle. Seems like a pointless headache - although I suppose it's better than the "Danyell" spelling I saw a long time ago...
Finally, I had to call a student named
Quelynn. Looking the student up I realized Quelynn was male. Since I had to leave a voicemail I guessed at the pronunciation and said "KEL-in." No idea if it's KEL-in or KYOO-lin or something else entirely.
I don't know, sometimes...
