Neo is short for Neophytos which is Greek for New Growth or Newly Planted. It is in NO WAY related to the Matrix character which is what a lot of people think. Moreover, it's pronounced differently.
The Matrix character is pronounced NEE-O, meanwhile this original version is pronounced Nay-Oh*, basically Mayo with an 'N'.
Other variations are Neofit, Neófito, Néophyte etcetera.
What do you think? Will it forever be tied to the Matrix movie to use? Should it be used in it's full form to avoid confusion?
Can you think of any good middle names to go with it?
