Ruby
A name I’ve been thinking of a lot lately. What do you think?

My BFF had a great great grandmother named Ruby Princess. It makes me think of that. And red plaid. And the name Reuben.I like it, generally: it seems very warm, and I like that it's associated with courage and protection...although it's not a name I'd use...it seems kinda circa 2005 to me.

I love it! Its cute and spunky but I can also see it on an older woman. My hubby vetoed it for a future daughters name for us, so we named our rescue pup Ruby last year :)

I think it's cute! I love gemstone names.

My first impression is A short, chubby girl with plain brown hair, not very cute at all. I went to middle and high school with a girl named Ruby that fit the description. I always bought it sad that a pretty gemstone name was given to her and she turned out so plain and somewhat ugly.
And her sister was named Jade, and was thin and beautiful and lovely. Anyways, I sorta like it. It’s kind of old fashioned but cute, shirt and spunky and happy.

Idk, I think one of the great things about gemstones is they can be hard and chunky and still pretty.

I suppose you can think any name you like “wasted” on someone who you don’t deem worthy of it.My like of Ruby doesn’t come from thinking rubies are beautiful and therefore a child with the name would be, I just simply like it. I don’t read too much into meaning to be honest. I find it cool when I find a name with a unique or interesting meaning, but it’s not something I hold much importance to.

I did what I usually don't and read the other responses before responding myself. I see that everyone who likes it says it's pretty. I like it, not because it's pretty, which IMO it isn't, but because it's ballsy and sassy.

In general, I am not a big fan of jewel names. They come off as somewhat cheap and material value/money oriented. A few stones are associated with something beyond the bling factor, such as pearl (purity), jasper (antiquity), and Chinese names with jade meanings (since in China jade has more religious significance). Ruby is just "look at me, so shiny."

Pretty name, and also a pretty stone. I hope Ruby doesn't get too common as it is a lovely name and that would be a shame but it might with peoples love of short nature names, and it isn't a bad name at all.

It's not a bad name in itself but I work in child care in Australia and I'm sick to death of Ruby. In popularity, here at least, it can rival Aiden, Maddison, Charlotte and Isabella.

I'm ambivalent about it. I used to really like it, but now I lean towards dislike.
I like the Ru- sound, the simplicity of the word, the image of the gem, the way it's both cute and complete.
I don't like the rhyme with booby, word association with rube, the "bling" aspect, and the possible sensual allusion to redness (like a lipstick color). I also think it wouldn't grow up that well - it seems liable to lose its cuteness and shine, like Amber or Carly.
So ... 6/10, which is better than most names, but a D minus if I'm naming my own baby.

My precious niece's name. It suits her because she is a small thing. I think it's a small, pretty, but sensible name. Ruby Gwendolyn is my favorite combo.

I love it! Was my fave girl name for years and years. Then when I met my DH, he had a little niece with this name, so I never got to use it! Still love the name though, it's so beautiful.

Hi peonini !!!If I were English this name would be great! The problem is that in Italian it has the same sound of 'tu rubi' (you steal). Plus it seems incomplete.I much prefer Rubina.
