I like middle names that are unexpected and/or that honour others. I realized recently that I am actually very old fashioned in that I consider the middle name the place to honour a person.

Flow and rhythm depends on the first name and last name, it's impossible to make a formula that will guarantee a satisfying result (at least for me).

To mean what matters most is the flow at the end of the 1st name and the connection to the beginning of the middle. If you can figure out that the rest will follow.

I don't have a preference for a specific amount of syllables or anything like that. To me a middle names has to have a special meaning or significance, just like the first name. I don't care that much about the flow, but they have to sound okay together.

I have four sons, their middle names are:

Emmanuel: because the religious/biblical meaning, and it's a family name in his dad's family
Húni: because of the nature/animal meaning and the connection to my Icelandic heritage
Pythagoras & Zakynthos (twins): I wasn't brave enough to use either as a first name. They both have a personal significance, especially Zakynthos

Mainly just not a generic, throw away type middle name. I hate those and I have one myself. Put as much thought into the middle name as you do the first.

A name with a special meaning. Flow is better when syllables vary and ending sounds aren't all the same. Meaning trumps flow in my opinion.

Usually something that has a different amount of syllables to the first name. E.g. if the first name is 3 syllables than the middle name is 2 or 1. Something that is unexpected, so not Rose, Elizabeth etc. And if honouring family is important to the person, then something that has a meaningful connection.
