What are your thought on Arrietty? She is the main character in the novel "The Borrowers" released in the 1950s.There is also a nice Studio Ghibli movie called "The Secret Life of Arrietty" based on the book which I really recommend! Please rate my list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/6232

It’s a name I really like, but wouldn’t use in real life.

Arrietty is very pretty, but I like Harriet more. It sounds too much like a place name, doesn't it? Like the name of a posh academy or a British district.Leaving this aside, it's not bad, just obscure - I wouldn't mind seeing it used more often.

I had a copy of that book growing up but admittedly never got around to reading it. Though I'll admit I was intrigued by the cover art the Tiny Family in hiding. It's an interesting concept for sure. I remember seeing seeing the ads for the movie too back when it came out but never saw it yet either, I'm just of no use lmao I have always been intrigued by the name though. It is definitely a very distinct. I don't think I can quite say I love it necessarily but I do find it very interesting. If I came across it IRL I would be happily amused. The main thing that is stopping me from loving it is the ending suffix sounding like Yeti. As in a big hairy beast. As a result I side-step this point by having a preference to the similar Arietta. Which I do love and would give theoretically consideration to.

My son goes to preschool with an Arrietty. I quite like it.

Borrowers 'borrow' the things they need from us ordinary-sized people. Sometimes they need names. Perhaps they misheard Harriet, or perhaps they heard someone with a Cockney accent (dropping the H) and a taste for making nicknames with a -y; either way, Arrietty is their best take on Harriet, and I see no point in ditching a beautiful classic in favour of a weakish joke at the expense of a fictional character.
