Rachel. I know a Rachel, and she is a nice people, maybe this influenced my opinion. But I just really don't like the sound, it sounds like a brat or a mean girl, even though I know a celebrity named Kimberly, and she is none of these.

Kimberly any day. I was tormented in school by a Rachel so I have no use for that name.

Rachel, for sure.
I had a (fairly terrible) aunt with the name Kimberly, and Rachel is just so much nicer sounding, as well.
I’ve known some amazing Kimberly’s, one being a friend I’ve had for over 25 years, but the majority of them have been pretty wretched people.

I like them both a lot. I think I'd choose Kimberly, it's got a natural nn if one is desired and Rachel not so much.

Definitely Rachel, though I prefer Rachael. Kimberly ... Kim is very dated and the only possible nn. Just Jonquil says Kimberly and Beverly are equally dated; I agree, but I also find the American spelling of both of them very odd and unattractive. Like adverbs. If you're happy, do something happily; if you're Bever, do something Beverly. In South Africa we know Kimberley, that version, as a small town in a dry semi-desert, icy in winter, scorching in summer, where the local diamond industry began. Now the mines are all closed and, fun fact, some are used for growing mushrooms in the dark.

Rachel because it has centuries of use. Besides, I like Biblical names. Kimberly strikes me as dated like the earlier Beverly.
