I think Emma, it sounds nice and feels classic, but not grandmotherly. Ella is nice, but I only know one, and it seems a bit too simple. (Not that Emma isn't)

Ella. Emma sounds glum, while Ella feels jazzy and energetic. Emma reminds me of the Jane Austen novel, so prim Regency dresses. Ella makes me think of Fitzgerald.

Emma. Emma has more substance and style and is more classic and timeless in my opinion.
Ella has superficial vibes.

Ella all the way. It sounds very pretty, and it’s not as common as Emma is. It also sounds more mature, and I’m glad it’s rising in popularity now.

I like Ella, but I love Emma! I'm a little sad that she is/ was so popular. She is so warm and kind.

Ella, I think. I do like Emma, but I've never actually met an Ella, so it seems a bit shinier to me. Also it could be a (very) loose honouring name for my great grandmother Ellen. Ella is a very blue name to me - an icy blue, steely blue. I like how vertical it is, as well. Makes me think of pale spires on a fairytale castle.

Emma. Ella just doesn’t appeal to me.

Ella. Emma, although a very practical and decent name, I've always felt rather indifferent to it. Sort of plain-even more so than Ella for some reason. Also I have a sister named Emily, so I wouldn't be able to use it anyway even if I wanted to. Probably Ella too, but especially Emma.

Ella is an elegant woman in a mauve dress, Emma is younger and wears deep purple.
Strangely enough, I've never met an Emma before! I'd definitely prefer Ella for myself; I'm fond of -elle names.
I also prefer Emilia and Emily to Emma.
To cut a long story short: today I want to name my daughter Emma, but it's an oddity, so I'd probably end up naming her Ella and call her Elle.

Where I'm from, I can't use Ella since it's the Spanish word for "she" as well as its pronunciation is different. So in this case I choose Emma. However, I like Ella more - its perennial, fresh, elegant, colourful while being mature. Short and sweet. If I was from an English-speaking country, Scandinavia or even Hungary (surprised by how recognisable it is throughout Europe!), I'd use it in a heartbeat. In conclusion, I choose Ella rather than classic but now-überpopular Emma.

Ella! I like L's in names because they're pretty and fun to say.
