Dennis
My mom told me she hates the name Dennis, it reminds her of the word pen!s. I have never thought of this, have you? I don't like the name because it sounds slimy to me.

I don't like the sound of it.

The only Dennis I ever knew was a total jerk. I will forever associate the name with him. I don’t like it at all.

We had a lot of residents named Dennis a year or so again, now we're down to one. None of them were particularly pleasant people. One of them was a complete slime ball. I hope it was just age that made him act the way he did, but I don't know. Since then I have not been able to stand the name at all.

I so can imagine an old Dennis, not a young one. I imagine the residents are old at a nursing home or something, I dunno.

I work at a long-term care (LTC) facility. Many of our residents are elderly, a few are not.The term nursing home isn't really used anymore.

That's interesting. It is used here in Canada.

Here the term is considered insulting and infantilizing. People still use it, but within the LTC industry care center or long-term care facility is the correct term. I'm 90% my in-laws and parents tell people I work in a nursing home, though.

Never occurred to me, it's a pretty weird connection, pulled out of one's left ear as it were. Quite like Dennis, actually.

I quite like Dennis (this spelling), even though it's a bit dated. Dennis the Menace has also imparted quite the impression on people - probably why the character on It's Always Sunny is called Dennis, honestly.

It doesn't remind me of penises. But it sounds smarmy and unintelligent.

My cousin was married to a Dennis. A burly, fun loving guy who died too young of cancer. I’ll always associated the name with him.

No doubt she'd hate Denis even more. I prefer it to Dennis, simply because I had a good friend at uni with the Denis spelling. Serious, pleasant, intelligent - all the right things. And if you're looking for a slimy name, look no further than Simon.

I agree, Simon is another one that I hate. She didn't mention the spelling, just said the name.

The Denis’s I know pronounce their name like Denise. I think it’s a Turkish name?

Here Dennis is just like Denis.

Where I live, it's just a spelling variation. Denise is surely the French fem version, which would make Denis itself French.

I don't care for it either. I also find it slimy and also dated. It always reminded me of dentist and of Dennis the menace. Also our family once knew a guy named this, who turned out to be a pedophile. Later on convicted. It's one name I sure the hell wouldn't be able to use even if I did happen to like it. 🙅‍♀️
It does make me think of the word you mentioned, but spelled Denis.

Yes, I'm like your mom. I've thought of it. I don't like Denis and one of the reasons is that it can easily look like Penis when written in cursive. I think it'd be ripe for his teen peers to pick on. There's also Dennis the Menace.

In cursive definitely!

Dennis is a handsome name—I love that it derives from the baroque Dionysus but is so pedestrian. I think I prefer Denis.

How exactly does one make that connection, even if spelled Denis? It's alright. I don't hold it to any particular standard, but I don't hate it.
vote up2
No idea. I looked at her and said "What? I would have never thought of that!" lol
