Real Life Estella Sitting!!
Estella is currently one of my favorite girl names that starts with E, and has been for quite some time. The other night, I was out to dinner with a friend when I noticed that our waitress had Estella on her name tag. I double-checked when she returned to the table—just to be sure. She was a dark blonde girl with seafoam green eyes, lots of freckles, and looked to be around 18 years old.
I got so excited that I asked her about her name and mentioned that it’s one of my ideas for a future daughter. She was really sweet and shared the following:
Her mom found the name Estella in a baby name book, saw it as a version of Estelle, and thought it was gorgeous—so she chose it for her daughter.
She doesn’t go by any nicknames. It’s either Estella in full, or something cutesy and familial like “Sweetie.”
She said she’d absolutely recommend the name because she’s gotten a lot of compliments on it over the years, which always makes her happy.
I forgot to ask her middle name, which I regretted—but figured that might have been pushing it with name questions for a stranger at that point, lol
She also mentioned that she had a speech impediment as a child and had trouble pronouncing Estella clearly. Sometimes people misheard her and wrote down the wrong name. But aside from that, she genuinely loves her name. She added, “I can mostly pronounce it correctly now—unless I’m really tired.”
If I were to use this name on a daughter I would call her Estella Clarisse, and if a nickname were being used it would probably be "Essie"

I prefer Estelle.
the French -E variants that were popular in the mid-20th century tend to look terribly old now to me. Example: Diane vs Diana. Diane feels so stuffy and uninteresting in comparison.
I like Estelle fine, but it feels too tired still, like a 50–70-year-old mom, not yet recyclable
I chose Ester for my daughter because I was worried Estelle would become too popular. Estella is a lovely take on the name. I'm not a fan of the character in Great Expectations, which is the only thing that puts me off, but it's a name that stands well on its own. I love Essie as a nn,and will be using it for my Ester. Clarisse is an elegant middle choice.

Ester is a nice choice. What middle did you go with if it's allowed to ask?
I like Estella but prefer Estelle and Stella. I love starry names. They feel princess-like without being overbearing. I'd probably use Stell as the nickname. I don't like the "essie" sound in names like Bessie, Tessie, Clessie, etc. I prefer "ettie" but even then, I'm picky.
I too, like to look at people's name tags. If I see staff pictures in another store, I also scan those for names.

Oh I always do too. That was how I found out one of the Baristas at the local coffee shop in my neighborhood was named Hera. They always keep personalized little name plates off to the cash register to help people remember the Baristas names. Her coworkers all had pretty ordinary young adult names but hers jumped out at me immediately. I remember she said that her two siblings had mythology names too but I'm afraid which ones they were are lost to my memory. She was a sweet girl and probably my favorite of the Baristas too, she quit when she finished College and moved away. I hope she's doing well. I need to go to the local coffee shop again sometime soon to see what the current lineup is.
