I actually dreamt of this etymology last night. My theory is that the word theory ("theoria" in Greek) is derived from "Theos" ("God") and the verb "orizo" ("to define"). If so, a theory in, its archaic meaning, signified one's definition of deity. This makes a lot of intuitive sense to me.
