I'd say it's from the Breton/English haer 'battle' + vy 'worthy', same source as Harvey. In England, H's in some accents/dialects are typically dropped leading to surnames like Arrington from Harrington, Alden from Haldane, etc. It's rather typical of estuary and the south/east London accent where Harvey is inevitably called 'Arvey! just as Harry is 'Arry!Devon
