This name existed before the commonly cited Peter Pan reference. There was a "Doctor Wendy" who cared for both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth (also their brother Edward and perhaps father Henry VIII). Although this is a last name in this case, it certainly points to the existance of the name prior to the Peter Pan Story.
