Tigris
I love the name Tigris, which is said to have been the name of Saint Patrick's sister, also a saint. But how come an Irish woman has the name of a river in the Middle East? And is the name used in Ireland today?Caprice - The Phantom of the BTN

I didn't realize that was a girls name.... I had a boy cat named Tigris and a girl cat named Nila (no one got it but me...)

St Patrick was not Irish - he was either Welsh or Breton I believe. Wikipedia says he was Romano-British. No Tigrises in Ireland today - at least their might be but it would be very rare.

Thanks for the information. Hmm, I should have remembered he was not Irish, I know I have read that...

My name book says that it's an Irish Gaelic name derived from Latin meaning tiger (the Latin name for the animal is Panthera tigris). Apparently, the similarity with the river's name is coincidental (which came about by the Greek translation of the Persian word Tigra into Tigris). There are 7 people with the name Tigris in the US.

Thanks for the answer! It still doesn't solve the "mystery", though...there are obviously no tigers in Ireland...

Who knows what 'tiger' meant to them at the time. It might have been a symbol of strength or...?
