Is Cheryl related to Charles?
I work with a gal named Sharyl who goes by Charlie and when I asked her today "Why Charlie?" she said: "My family has always called me Charlie, I guess because Sharyl is a feminine form of Charles."
When she said that it sounded reasonable but now that I'm looking it up I can't find any info that would support Cheryl / Sharyl being related to Charles or Charlotte. Maybe it's a form through Carol?

The website says that Cheryl is an invented name based on Cherie and Beryl. I don't think it's related to Charles.

It's probably just a bit of family mythology that developed in the absence of any actual etymological knowledge. It's entirely possible that the nickname Charlie just started spontaneously, and the thing about Sharyl was a bit of reasoning added in later to explain it.
