Hi Joyce - Viroqua was also my grandmother's name only spelled Veroqua
Family history dictates that it is a Native American name meaning little flower although I have not been able to verify this as true or attribute it to a specific tribe.
That said, there is a town in Wisconsin of the same name and my grandmother's father descends from Madison, Wisconsin so it could be based on the town's name and legend.
That legend is that a Native American girl rode a horse off a cliff - the reasons are varying in the story as to why she rode off the cliff though.
Either a) she was trying to escape capture by white men
OR b) She was despondent because her father would not let her marry a white man that she loved
OR c) She loved a Native American boy who was killed by a white man.
Either way the story doesn't bode well for white men or for her. Her name was apparently Viroqua but what it meant or what tribe is not clear - tribes indigenous to the Madison Wisconsin area though are most likely. Still looking for something definite but that is what I know so far. Hope it helps.
