Helle
What does the name Helle mean? Could it be a Polish / Yiddish form of Eliyahu? I'm not sure of the spelling, but it's pronounced hellay or helluh. He was my grand uncle in law, born in Poland around 1905 in a Jewish family. Thx!Claire

I'm neither Jewish nor know much about Jewish names, but I'm polish and I've never heard about the name Helle being used in Poland. The usual Polish form of Eliyah/Eliyahu is Eliasz, there is also a bit older, sort of archaic one I guess, which is Heliasz. So I doubt someone would use Helle as another form of this name here, but as I say I'm not an expert on Jewish names, maybe it could be a diminutive or something? That'd make more sense to me...
Hope that helps a little bit. :)

Perhaps it's a variation of Hillel but I'm far less sure about this one than about the others.

Um...Helle's already in the database. Two derivations, in fact: one Greek, meaning unknown, and the other a Danish variant of Helga. Both are listed as female names. But I don't know if there could be a third definition or not.Miranda

I think there's a third definition, because the two others aren't the good ones in this case...
