In the late 70's I found the name KAI in a book of Baby Names. It was male and supposedly meant King (Ancient Persian). Unfortunately I no longer have the book, but named my daughter KAI - she can be anything she wants to be.
A number of people have also told me that Kai also means food in some Polynesian languages (Maori - New Zealand)and also has some links to food in some Asian languages (Thai).
