I wasn't much convinced by BtN's listing on Samara ... It's a possible origin, of course, but several good sources have listed it as a Hebrew name meaning "protected by God". (The Oxygen Babynamer is one such source: http://tools.oxygen.com/babynamer/TypeASearch.cfm?Gender=G&Unique=3&TellMeAbout=samara)
Does anyone know more definitely? I'm interested in etymology, first usage, meaning, variant forms ...

SAMARA is not Hebrew, at least not the way it is spelt here. "Protect" in Hebrew is "shamar" with a Schin at the beginning. But it's not really a big step from Sh to S, so maybe it's just a variant.
I would still take it as the feminine form of Arabic SAMAR (or SAMIR) "intimate night talk". (Hanks & Hodges '92 only have SAMAR as a feminine name though).
