Clarence and Cecily have been through some difficult times in the last fifteen years. Sylvie's cancer diagnosis and treatment, including the bone marrow transplant from Merrick, almost ended their marriage. They lived separately for awhile, but after Sylvie was declared to be in remission, they started therapy as a couple and as a family, and were able to work through it. Clarence continues to work as an emergency room physician at the university medical center and is now recognized as one of the leading physician-educators. Cecily left the finance field permanently when Sylvie was diagnosed and has began to pursue a childhood dream -- writing. During the family's experience with Sylvie's leukemia, Cecily kept a journal which she adapted to a blog, and then a book. The book was successful, and Cecily began to write full-time, publishing several non-fiction books about dealing with childhood cancer (one co-written with Sylvie and Merrick) and is currently trying her hand at novels.

Arden has followed in her father's footsteps and become a physician. She married one of her medical school classmates during their residencies. They have now finished their residences, Arden in pediatrics and Eamon in family medicine. Arden is about to begin a fellowship in hospital medicine and Eamon has joined a hospital-based practice. The couple has just found out that they are expecting another baby!

Cormac continued to play baseball into high school, becoming one of the best infielders in the state and going on to play Division I college ball. He majored in sports medicine and athletic training and currently plays in the minor leagues and was invited to the major league spring training camp this year. He is married to his college sweetheart, Kirsten, herself a college soccer player.

Mavis became very interested in languages and history in high school and studied ancient civilizations in college, learning Ancient Greek in addition to the Latin she learned in high school. She fell in love with and married a man she met in her philosophy class at 21 and quickly became pregnant. However, Idris felt unready for fatherhood, and left Mavis, moving to his grandparents' home in Wales and filing divorce papers from overseas. Their relationship remains very cool, and Persephone was born as the divorce was underway. Mavis has raised Persephone as a single mother with the help of her parents and siblings. After a leave of absence, Mavis graduated with highest honors and plans to start graduate school.

As Sylvie's HLA-match, Merrick had bit of a rough ride during his sister's cancer treatments. He frequently donated blood for her, and ultimately became her bone marrow donor. He was glad he could help his sister, but hated missing sports practices and being away from his twin. He and Sylvie grew very close, however, and he is very protective and supportive of her. Together they worked on a memoir of their experience with their mother, which they titled "Bound by Blood." Merrick has recently graduated from college with a business degree, and currently works for a small non-profit organization. He is happy that Sylvie will be staying nearby for college. He is currently dating a friend of friend, who also happened to go to school with Mavis.

Graeme and Blaire have just graduated from 5-year programs at the same college. Graeme majored in engineering, and Blaire in industrial design. They have been dating for two years and Graeme asked her to marry him at their joint graduation party with all of their family and friends present.

Just before her 4th birthday, Sylvie was diagnosed with childhood leukemia. She was very fortunate that her brother Merrick was an HLA match and was able to donate bone marrow for Sylvie to get a transplant. After several years of treatment, Sylvie is now cancer-free, and is active in a cancer survivors group. She is about to graduate from high school, and will be attending college in the fall, majoring in biology. She hasn't decided what she wants to do yet, though with physician family members, she is considering going to medical school.
