The celebrations were shortly followed by the celebration of Lord Lupus' fiftieth birthday party for which - in addition to all of Cassian and Xanthe's guests - large swaths of his fellow servicemen and several foreign dignitaries were invited. Even Orlando took leave to attend the wedding and birthday party. A quail hunt was organised - there wasn't much to hunt in Castonia but quails. Shots rang along the moors all through the day.One was followed by a scream. The company sprung to action, rushing to the scene of the accident, but it was too late. Lord Lupus had been shot clean through the neck the day of his 50th birthday. Lady Callista was devastated, and Xanthe cradled her weeping husband. Orlando inspected the bullet wound, and gave his verdict: it was his professional opinion that the shot was not fired by accident.Lady Callista was grim, but resolute: the killer had to be located and apprehended. Time was of essence. The family could not well ask the guests to stay until the matter was resolved without arousing suspicion - especially not the foreign dignitaries. Since nothing could be done with them once they left the country, the Castletowns decided to commence their investigation from them.A quick perusal of the guest list revealed an oddity, one spotted only by Xanthe - she realised one of the invited dignitaries bore the name of a vengeful figure in Franconian folklore. It could have been an odd coincidence, but the Castletowns could take no chances. Xanthe and Orlando teamed up to pressure the suspicious guest into a confession while Callista and Cassian searched for other leads.Xanthe and Orlando's impromptu interrogation proved fruitful. The accused did not try to defend himself for long, saying that what he shot the spy Lupus like a dog. Before more could he drawn out of him, the killer pulled out a knife. Orlando quickly produced his rapier from his side to defend Xanthe and himself, but he needn't have - the killer raised his knife against himself, and slit his throat. What to do with the corpse of a Franconian diplomat who had just committed suicide in front of them, Orlando and Xanthe did not know. Thus, they fetched for an ex serviceman friend of their father's who they hoped they could trust. He was in agreement that a dead diplomat shoot an ex-spy would not bode well for the Castletowns.Frantic correspondence was exchanged with the Franconian government, officials on both sides hoping to avoid a civil war. It was revealed to the family that the man who killed Lupus was not, in fact, a diplomat, but an impersonator, once a spy for the Franconian Republic long dismissed for bouts of paranoia, and his murder disavowed by officials. For the benefit of both the Albionese and Franconian governments, the killer's body was promptly removed and Lord Lupus' death officially declared a tragic accident. His funeral was well-attended, most guests staying to pay their respects. After they departed, the Castletowns were left to mourn alone. 🕊️❣️🌻💌🌻❣️🕊️masculine list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/191050/124079
