Orlando & Clementine
Lady Callista worried about Orlando. While Cassian and Xanthe were happily married, Orlando was fully dedicated to his military career, having been made Lieutenant at 25. The military had a reputation for camaraderie, but Callista thought her son led a lonesome, self-deprived existence, and what he needed was a wife. Orlando disagreed quite vehemently. But during one of his visits home, Lady Callista invited over a young Franconian woman. She was a sweet, amiable girl, who did her very best to ingratiate herself to Orlando. Her efforts were fruitless - he was not in the least interested in marriage.
One evening, Lady Callista called her son to her parlour for a stern talking to - something that had not happened since he broke her prized flower vase when he was 11. She explained that news of Lord Lupus having been murdered had got out, and relationships between Albion and Franconia were thus fraying. The son of a prominent Albionese noble family marrying a Franconian woman and moving to her fatherland would be seen as extending an olive branch, and could ameliorate relations between the two nations.
Orlando was torn. On the one hand, he had absolutely no desire to marry or move to Franconia. On the other, he was a patriot who saw that Franconia was a valuable military ally to Albion, one the nation could not afford to lose. And besides, being away on military campaigns most of the time, he would only be forced to spend time with his bride when he was on leave (and half-pay). He reluctantly agreed.
The well-attended wedding took place in the château that was his bride's dowry. The wedding party was praised in Albionese and Franconian newspapers alike. Orlando's bride wore a beautiful dress inspired by Franconian folk designs. He himself was wed in his uniform, bedecked in Albionese regalia. In more ways than one, he was preparing for battle.
Theirs was not a happy marriage like Cassian and Xanthe's. Cassian stayed three weeks with his new bride before leaving for another extended military campaign, and they were an excruciating three weeks - their interactions were stiff, awkward, and completely devoid of intimacy. His relationship with his mother also soured. Even though he agreed to the match, he blamed her for his its unhappiness, and his letters became cold and sparse.
To his brother, he still wrote extensively of his life in the army, but glossed over the subject of his marriage, ignoring all of Cassian's questions about his bride. Only when writing to his sister-in-law did he confess how desolate he felt, and how disastrous he found the match. His bride and him had nothing in common except for a desire that their nations retain diplomatic ties, which was a poor basis for marriage.
When he was on leave, Orlando returned to Franconia, where he endured uncomfortable, stiff conversation with his wife, instead of returning to his childhood home like he used to. The Castletowns realised just how much their life had revolved around Orlando - when he visited, they threw parties, organised quail hunts, and spent each evening laughing together while he regaled them with tales of his travels and adventures. A lot of the time he was gone, they spent anticipating his arrival - one which happened no more often than once a year since his marriage, and he arrived forlorn, with his equally gloomy bride in toll.
Cassian and Xanthe have, at least, their two sons to comfort them - a boy of two and a newborn.
