Everyone in Cloudhill and Northwood is celebrating the engagement of Princess Alena, future Empress of Cloudhill. Her mother is the current Empress and the title traditionally goes to the oldest child. Her father is the heir to Kingdom of Northwood, but his title goes to his sons then his daughters. This is good for the people of Cloudhill, who want independence from Northwood. Prince Apollo and Empress Anushka primarily live in Cloudhill, and Empress Anushka is preparing her daughter to take over for her. Alena's fiance is Sir Gabriel. Even though he is a lowly baronet, the match has public approval. Gabe served their country in a minor conflict and has progressive views, which makes him a public favorite. He is humble and devoted to Alena, who loves him. He is very popular and has won over everyone with his treatment of Alena. They will probably wed soon.
Queen Callista is not happy with her younger children. Her oldest two children have continued to expand their families and she now has 8 grandchildren from her first two kids. She has tried to marry off Arianwen, but she declined her suitor's hand. Arianwen seriously considered marrying Lord Randolph until she went to visit an old maid who had worked for his family for almost 80 years. The former maid said that the Baron's family had been involved with the legal system for a long time, but had helped send peasants to jail for very petty crimes. Then Lord Randolph's started embezzling lots of money from their law firm and the estate. Finally there was at least one mysterious death connected to the family, but they had used the embezzled money to bribe officials and the deceased's family. Arianwen had enough and she broke her relationship. Her mother was unconvinced that anything the maid said was true. Her father was worried about the revelations the maid revealed and didn't want her involved with Lord Randolph. Her mother has tried to set Arianwen up, but she has rejected all suitors.
Prince Aurelian is not settling down either. He is in a relationship with an opera singer named Nova Jolie Willows. He does not plan to marry her and she is aware of the situation. His parents aren't too worried about the relationship, although his father has warned him not to spend too much money on both the opera singer and in general.
Prince Ansel and Dame Myrto are amazingly still alive and still flourishing. King Alfonso has grown close to them and sees them as surrogate parents. Queen Callista is also starting to cherish them, and is telling everyone to read Revecca Crownwell's newest mystery "The Three Dogs that Didn't Bark", which Callista highly enjoyed.
