Prosper, already, has taken on a mistress! Carolina and he only keep up their relationship for appearances' sake, but neither of them want a marriage. Prosper doesn't want to end the courtship, so he's waiting for Carolina to finally leave him. Meanwhile, High Priestess Marisol, House of Xenon, servant of Braegan, goddess of fertility and agriculture, has used her status to bed a handsome man. As priestess of Braegan, she and her fellow cult members get to sleep around scot-free in service to their queen. Prosper, a skeptic of the gods, had no qualms with sleeping with the Marisol. She had a son and named him Ajax. A new house in the priestly line has been born, House Creed. As the eldest son of a High Priestess, Ajax will be groomed into the masculine version of the role. There are as many male servants of Braegan as there are female, and many a high priest.
Tragedy strikes the Creed tower, however, when Edric, aged eleven, goes missing for six months! Callista and Ezra demand a search be made the very day Edric was gone. No matter the efforts of man through search or sacrifice, however, the boy cannot be found. The Creeds began recieving strange notes and parcels on their doorstep, demanding a ransom and containing locks of hair, a note from Edric himself.
They found the body three months later, abandoned in a field.
Brothers, Marquess Silverstone of Ashdown and Marquess of Brandol, came with their condolences. Their father had once been Ezra's mentor. In doing so, they met Aditi and Dido, women too beautiful to be so sad. They learned of the girls' history, how Mei refused to let them take the same path as her, but their reputations were ruined by their birth and so they had no chance at marrying. Asa and Nicanor didn't care. They offered to marry the girls and send some money to Mei every month. Aditi had already fallen for Asa (she's a bit of a romantic) and Dido had finally found someone who would listen to her crazy thoughts.
Mei agreed, and now she is retired from that work. She took her childhood lessons in sewing and makes blankets now.
Callista, meanwhile, fell very unexpectedly pregnant after Edric's death. It was a very, very hard pregnancy, and both she and baby Evander nearly died. It was with immense joy he was welcomed by his parents and Mei, who Callista is still very good friends with, but Prosper was still in seclusion after Edric. He barely saw anyone, only the customers at the tannery, which he runs now that his grandfather is retired and on an extended vacation. Carolina used the chaos of the disappearance to see a friend, Lord Ramses, who she believes will be a more suitable match for her.
Two years go by, with the family recovering well. Carolina has a son in seclusion to save her honor. The child is given to Lord Ramses and an adoption story is fabricated. At the same time, Marisol had Proper's daughter Lalitha, House Xenon. She will likely serve Braegan but does not have to, like Ajax.
