I don't think Samantha is dated at all. It's been pretty popular for a good thirty years or so, and while it might not be top 10 now, it's not dated and won't be for a good while, if it ever is.

I think Sam is avoidable at home, but you really can't control what a person prefers to be called by by their friends or people they work with.
