I only like it with the emphasis spoken on the second syllable like ber-NARD but growing up I only ever heard it said as BER-nud which is really ugly IMO.
I went to school with a girl called
Bernie (short for
Bernice) and my best friend had a cockatiel with that name. I'm also reminded of
Bernie Eccelstone, I don't really care for it.
I could get behind
Bernard (ber-NARD), it would be quite nice to see it on somebody else's child but I would try not to use
Bernie.
