Fascinating, as always - thank you! I look forward to Mary, Marie and Mariah: and I might mention that in South Africa Maria has been a popular name in Afrikaans for centuries, and it typically shortens to Marie, which is pronounced MAH-ri. Compounds like Anne-Marie, however, have the m'REE pronunciation: usually but not always used by English speakers.
