I assume she became Marie in order to go unnoticed, given that it was the most common feminine name back in 19th-century France. It's a pity because Alphonsine has an irresistible charm, but Marie is certainly more direct and solid.I also appreciate that Verdi replaced a flower name with another flower name. Both Violetta and Marguerite are gorgeous.
