It can work in the real world :) I used to know an Agnes (with a sister Joyce!) who would be 18 or 19 now, and I don't recall anyone ever saying anything negative about it.
I like it without a nickname but Aggie is better than Ness.
Agnes Winifred and Agnes Maeve are particular favourites.
