Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Ἀκταῖος (Aktaios), which may have been derived from Greek ἀκτὴ (akte), which can mean "headland, foreland, promontory, cape" as well as "coast, shore". However, it could also have been derived from Greek ἄγω (agō) meaning "to lead". For the latter etymology, just compare the Greek word ἄκτωρ (aktōr) meaning "leader", which is related to Latin actor "doer". In Greek mythology, Actaeus was the name of the first king of Attica.
