Probably derived from Greek αἰγίς (aigis) meaning "goatskin, fleece", but that can also refer to the shield of Zeus. Also compare Greek αἴγειος (aigeios) meaning "of a goat". Another possibility is that it was derived from Greek αἴξ (aix) meaning "a tall wave". This name is usually latinized to Aegeas.
