Meaning & History

Probably means "the Protectress, the Defender" from the Greek verb ἀλαλκεῖν (alalkein) "to ward, to keep off". This was an epithet of the goddess Athena as guardian of Boeotia. It is connected with the name of Ἀλαλκομεναί (Alalkomenai), a city in Boeotia; also compare Alalcomenes.
