Means "dwelling, abode". From the Buddhist term ālaya-vijñāna 'storehouse consciousness' as developed by the Yogācāra school of Indian Buddhism, referring to the place where a person's karma resides, the eighth level of consciousness that provides the base for the previous seven. It's growing popularity may be due to it also being used as a variant of ALIYAH.
