Meaning & History
Latinized form of ALKESTIS. In Greek mythology, this was the name of a princess who offered to die in the place of her husband Admetus. She was later rescued from the Underworld by Heracles and reunited with Admetus, who was also allowed to live. She was the eponymous heroine of Euripides' tragedy Alcestis (438 BC).
