Meaning & History
According to The Book of Mormon, Alma is the name of two male prophets, commonly known as Alma the Elder and Alma the Younger. Alma the Elder was first seen as a corrupt priest who repented after being taught by the prophet Abinadi. After Abinadi's death, Alma the Elder began to preach the gospel in secret, baptizing approximately 450 people. His son, Alma the Younger, also rebelled against the church and, as a young man, tried to destroy it. According to the book of Alma, Alma the Younger was visited by an angel and repented, going on to become a great missionary and prophet. Because of the popularity of these two Book of Mormon figures, Mormons commonly use Alma as a masculine given name.
