From a surname which was either from the medieval personal name Alstan or from various English places called Alston or Alstone. They are composed of an Old English personal name combined with the element tun "settlement" (for example, Alstone means "Ælfsige's settlement"), with the exception of Alston in Cumbria, which is formed with the Old Norse personal name Hálfdan.
