Meaning: Several sources state that this given name is likely derived from Latin ardalio or ardelio meaning "busybody" (which thus connotates troublesomeness), but it is probably more likely that it is derived from ἀρδάλιον (ardalion), the Greek name for a certain water vessel or cup. The name itself is probably derived from the Greek verb ἄρδω (ardo) meaning "to water, to bedew" (not to be confused with Greek ἄρδα (arda) meaning "mud, dirt"), which the ancient Greeks probably derived from Thracian arda(s) or arta(s) meaning "current, river". Also compare the similar-looking name Ardalos. Known bearers of this name include a 4th-century saint from Asia Minor, the Russian statesman Ardalion Torsukov (1754-1810), the Soviet engineer Ardalion Rastov (1926-2012), the Soviet athlete Ardalion Ignatyev (1930-1998) and the Georgian soccer player Ardalion Mikaberidze (b. 1986).
