Pronunciation: ARTH-miel, ARTH-maylMeaning: Form of Armel. Saint Arthmael or Armel, son of King Hoel the Great, was born in South Wales in 538 AD during the reign of Arthur. According to legend, Arthmael saved Brittany from a dragon by forcing it to drown itself in the river at Mont-Saint-Armel. Chris Barber and David Pykitt have theorized that "St. Arthmael" was another name for King Arthur himself, who abdicated after the Battle of Camlann and retired to Brittany, where he became an important evangeliser.(Information from name #118049 originally submitted by user Konaharei)
