This name is often taken to mean "lady of the sea" and the goddess was an ancient Semitic deity that preceded Hebrew monotheism. [noted -ed]
Israelites are monotheistic. They have ONE god. There was never a goddess.
The name Asherah meant "She who walks in the sea." It also is a goddess name so it probably is a goddess of the sea.
