Meaning & History

Meaning unknown, but refers to the god Ashur.

A noted bearer is Ashur-uballit I (reigned 1365 - 1330 BCE), the first king of the Middle Assyrian Empire (1365 – 1050 BCE). His defeat of the Mitanni king Shuttarna II marks Assyria's independence from this kingdom, and the beginning of its emergence as a powerful empire.
