Meaning: Derived from ბაია (baia), which is the Georgian name for the buttercup flower or really any flowering plant from the Ranunculus genus. In older times, Baia was also used as a masculine name. Historical documents from the 13th century and the existence of the patronymic surname of ბაიაშვილი (Baiashvili) prove this. However, the masculine name Baia most likely has a completely different etymology. It might possibly be derived from the Turkish military title beg meaning "chieftain, master".
