Meaning & History

Medieval Frisian diminutive of Beuwe.

Medieval Dutch bearers of the name were mostly located in what are now the provinces of North Holland, South Holland and Utrecht. For them, the name might possibly have had a different etymology, in which case a relation with modern Dutch beuk meaning "beech tree" seems to be a possibility.
