Beverly

I’m torn on how I feel about this name. I've got an adorable grandmother named Beverly, & we maintain a friendly college football rivalry (she likes the Oregon Ducks & I like the Utah Utes). However, the fact that “beaver” is an unfortunate nickname for a woman’s … private area … makes the definition of “beaver stream” sound inappropriate to me. I won’t give someone grief for having the name, but I don’t plan on giving the name to any daughters I may have.

Beverly does not sound masculine at all.

This name is a very respectable name in my mind. Also, the Beverly Cleary association is amazing! For some reason, the name Beverly sounds “bookish” to me; maybe Cleary is why!

Lots of comments saying this is an “old lady” name. Who cares? All old lady names used to be young lady names, and all the young lady names of today will be old lady names in the future. (And who says having an old lady name is a bad thing anyway?)

Beverley is a wonderful name — don’t forget it!

Well, I have nothing against Beverly. It's funny, because I always believed that Beverly was a very 80s and 90s name, but now I see that no, that it is much more old-fashioned than I thought. Personally, I find Beverly a youthful and rich girl name, but I may be wrong. I wouldn't give it to my daughter, but it's not an ugly name. Better than Ava, Mia, Kaycee, Josie or something like this. Hopefully soon have it return.

I can see this making a comeback, with Evelyn in the top 10 why not.

Beverly seems a bit too dated and reminds me of beavers. I do prefer this over Everly, though.

I really like the name Beverly! To me, it is the kind of pretty, unique, old-fashioned name. It used to be common in the forties I believe, but has been out of style ever since the sixties or so. However, I will not be naming my future-child Beverly, but the name still remains beautiful to me. I prefer this spelling of Beverly rather than Beverley. An issue I have with the name is the diminutive "Bev", which I’m not crazy about. The comments about how the name sounds like a beaver are foolish and immature! Grow up already... one of the main reasons I like this name is because one of the protagonists from my favorite novel is called Beverly Marsh. As you can maybe guess, the novel is IT by Stephen King. Overall, Beverly is an oldie but goodie. Many think it hasn’t aged well, and I don’t completely disagree, yet in my opinion, it has aged properly and still remains a damn nice one. Some nicknames for Beverly: Bev, Bevvie, Lee, etc... I’d personally go by Lee, if my name were Beverly. Thanks for reading :)

My name is Beverley and I live in the UK. I'm aged 53 and one of 5 daughters- I am the eldest! As my parents had more and more daughters their girl names became more and more feminine! I dislike my name it sounds old and dated! I don't hear of many but when I do the name always belongs to an older person or of African/West Indies origin. My sisters don't like my name and all call me Bev. Oh well, I guess it could be worse- apparently I was going to be Michelle but my dad came up with Beverley! I feel better about it now that I am older, it sits better I guess. One thing's for sure I would never use it for any daughter of mine which is probably why I got 3 sons!

This is one of the names I absolutely despise! It’s weird, because I like most B names, like Betsy and Buffy. Beverly, though, seems awful and a complete waste of time - maybe because it’s old-fashioned? I like most old-fashioned and/or classic names, though...

My name is also Beverly, at first I don't feel like loving it and even created a name I like and wished to be my name "Kaenah" but then as I grew older and understood the meaning of my name I turned to kinda like it too, it's really a great name to have after all...

Beverly is a place name. It immediately makes me think of California, sun, luxury, people who can do whatever they want, parties, movies, wonderful houses, clothes, cars and objects.

After that I loved the characters of Beverly Penn (played by Jessica Brown Findlay in 'Winter's Tale) and Beverly Marsh (played by Sophia Lillis in 'It').

With the name Beverly there seems to be an obligation among friends to nickname me. I've been Bebo, Beevo, Beeverlee, Boogerly, and more.
Of course, when the TV show Beverly Hillbillies came out, I was just a kid and so got teased about that, too. And my last name also got tons of attention. It's strange in a way to get extra attention only because your name is different. As an adult now I get much less attention over the first name, and I even sometimes miss that!? Strange.

In the Bible it says everyone must pull his own weight... well I know seven Beverlys and all of us do... strong, single self supporting self employed women.

Some people name girls Beverly because in some places it means ambitious, but generally I've seen the ambitious definition only for males, while the definition of beaver meadow pertains to females. I'm okay with both! All the ones I know ARE AMBITIOUS. We stand strong.

I love this name. It has a mystery and Grace to it. I am so lucky to have this name, because I nearly got the name Barbara instead, which has always sounded hard to me. Some of my boyfriends have told me how they like the soft sound of Beverly.

This is my mother's name. My grandma says she picked it because it was popular in 1959 and it started with a "B" like her sibling's names (Bradford and Barbara). She says if she knew it meant "beaver" she might have reconsidered, but they like it overall. Just because it's my mother's name I associate it as rather dated, but that's my opinion.

Also a rare derivative is BEVERLYN. I like that one, too, because it's different.

Someone here said they never met a Beverly that wasn't slow... I beg to differ. My name is Beverly and I have a higher IQ and a degree from a four year University.
I have known at least 7 Beverlys and I can say none are on the slow side.
On a side note, men like all the B names in general for women. Perhaps unconsciously, we are seen as bosomy, but not in a slutty way. I have researched this name and most men like it and see the bearer as sweet, loving and sexy. Many women like it, also, but less so than men and even less with the middle name of Ann. I like it as a stand alone type name, but then double first names just don't do it for me. Think BILLY BOB and BOBBIE SUE and that ilk... whatever.

My name is Beverly. I have come to love it because it is rare, though in my small town there are about twenty of us... all seniors. I do not like the name used with Ann however. My mother didn't even give me a middle name because she said Ann or Sue would be too common.

In England it's a bit more common for a male than in the US. There is a member of the rock band ELO named BEV BEVAN, which is quite unique. For me though, I don't let anyone call me BEV. BEVERLY ages well... sounds both hard and soft, and somewhat dignified and graceful. Not over used like Michelle or Lisa from the 1960s and 70s, or further back, Kathy from the 1950s. Jmho... everyone has their preferences.

When I was younger I never liked her name. But now as an adult I think it is sophisticated and slightly unusual. Although I still wouldn't choose this name for a daughter even though I would love to honor my mother by passing down her name.

My name is Beverly and when I was growing up I used to see the meaning of my name listed in other books as meaning 'ambitious'. To me that means a hard worker and not a burden to others. I discovered the name of 'Beverly' was being used among the American Indians before the USA was a nation. I think this is a pretty name. While true, it is an older name (it's the name of my grandmother) I could see it making a comeback. I like how it looks, and it's unique in a way.

This is my name and I wish my mother had looked up the orginal meaning. My little sister (Heather) calls me "Beaver". In today's world that is NOT a good nickname. I do like it though. It is quite rare apparently.
