This name is rarely used in Brazil nowadays, being mostly associated with a district in the city of São Paulo with many factories and warehouses, known as a center of textile manufacturing.
The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (Portuguese: Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas), also translated as “Epitaph of a Small Winner”, is a novel by the Brazilian writer Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. The novel is narrated by the dead protagonist Brás Cubas, who tells his own life story from beyond the grave, noting his mistakes and failed romances.
The name of the country Brazil is not related to the name Bras. It's derived from a kind of tree, brazilwood, which name means "red like ember" in Latin.
