Meaning & History

Derived from Old English bregu "ruler" (compare Breguswið) and wine "friend". This was the name of a saint (d. 764) who was a medieval Archbishop of Canterbury, the successor of Cuthbert. After his death, he was considered a saint and a life about him was written in the 12th century.
