This name rhymes with my surname through the “air” sound. So, if any potential daughter had my surname, it might not be good with it. However, Cheryl is one of my favorite names. There’s just something so happy about it; I can’t help but smile when I say it. I don’t get why this name isn’t very popular anymore. What an awesome name!
My thoughts regarding this particular name are not unpopular. Like many, I as well perceive this name as being dated and very much unattractive.
I don't really like the pronunciation but I do like the spelling.
It makes me think of a name for a cherry-flavoured chewing gum brand... which make it sound fresh, somehow, despite it being actually a quite ancient name.
(I like cherry chewing gum please don't take this comparison as derogatory from me)
Cheryl is my first name and my mom named it. Although using the name Cheryl in Asian locations may be a bit difficult for my classmates (or even some teachers who aren't native speakers) to pronounce it (like some of them read it like cherry which is quite annoying to me, perhaps no one hopes people read their name incorrectly), this name is mostly unique and easy to recognise.
I changed my name to Cheryl and honestly, I love it. It doesn't feel old to me, it feels unique and people said they really like it, one girl even said it gave her a new impression on the name after meeting me. I wish this name could make a little comeback as it's beautiful, smooth, and funky!
Cheryl has a soft sound and sounds like "cherry". Wish it was used more nowadays.
Ah, Cheryl seems like a very nice name to me. Too bad it doesn't listen so much anymore, right? It seems to me that it has fallen into oblivion a bit. I hope that in a few years there will be more Cheryls in the world. I think it is an elegant, classy and beautiful name.
I can see this name making a comeback. It’s certainly worthy of one. Pretty, feminine and ages well. What more could you possibly want? I’d use it!
This is a pretty name.
My name is Cheryl Lynn and I think it's just right. Came from my aunt Shirley and my aunt Carol, my mother's sisters, and here I am Cheryl. There should always be a reason you name your kids who they are and if there is no personal connection to it then it's just a name and no connection but I'm connected to my name and I know I have a meaning to this life.
I was born Cheryl Lind in 1955. I did not like being called CHERRIL or SHERRY (I was given the name because my mothers side had lots of Charlotte. She HAD to make mine Cheryl. I'm a % French so it did not bother me. I prefer my middle name to stay where it is and legally change Cheryl to another name that my great gran would have loved.
No more Cheryl for me.
Lovely.
Sherrill Lyn is my name born in '58. Namesake is my daddy Charles and means beloved which I am also, a great way a dear companion. Love my name but dislike when people call it out wrongly, Sherl Sharon. It's a really delicate dainty name and I really embrace my name as an artistic, creative being.
This name always reminds me of cherries, or more specifically, sherry. Seems quite rich and vivid, like Rose.
Cheryl is the name of my cousin sister who was born in 2002.
I like this name because I find this name sweet, delicate and feminine!
However, if your kid uses this name, you'd better tell others the correct pronunciation and the correct spelling of this name, otherwise, people may call them "Cherry" or "Salad", and misspell the name as "Sheryl".
Old name from the fifties and even before that.
This name needs to be retired. It's 2018, not 1978. If you need a modern name that starts with C, try Chelsea, Caitlin or Cassandra/Cassie.
Cheryl is a very pretty name. I do not care for Cher.
Cheryl is a lovely name just the way it is.
I'm Cheryl Elaine born in 1958. I love my name.
Another Cheryl Ann here, born in 1966 in the midwest USA... My hillbilly Grandmother could never quite get the spelling, opting for Chrlye... and always called me Shur-lann... I don't think it's a bad name at all... I think it's pretty, if I do say so myself, and why not... I didn't choose it, it was given to me! :)
My name is Cheryl Anne and I was born 1959. I was told I was named after the Tug Boat on the TV series called "Waterfront" I looked it up and there are a lot of women born in the 50's who were named Cheryl Ann and named after this same tug boat. (life is funny) There's a facebook group for it too.I have always had challenges with people spelling my name. When I say it, it sounds like Cherold. Maybe it's just how I pronounce it. When people ask me how to spell it, I say "C" and they write "S". Funny. The other thing I noticed odd is the "YL" part of the spelling. I notice that most people when writing it will mix the two letters up or leave one of them out. I realize that there are not many words in the English language that have "YL" as an ending. Words usually end "LY" Odd...I once had a relative that would send me Christmas cards every year they would write my name completely different from all the other years. That was really funny. I knew there were a few ways to spell Cheryl, but during my research I found that there are actually a lot of ways to spell it. Here's to you, all you Cheryl Anne's or Cheryl Ann's, we all make history!
I am a Cheryl circa 1958. My name was inspired by Rita Hayworth's daughter Cheryl Crane. Cheryl Crawford was Joan Crawford's abused daughter. I hated this name. No one could spell it, nor even try to. It wasn't cute like Linda or Diane. It was years before I met another Cheryl. P.S. I was born on the west coast. Calling all people with a name they didn't choose trash is rude. I hate the nicknames for it too - Cheri, Cher Bear.
This is my 51 year old mother's name. While it isn't a bad name, it's hard to imagine it on a small child. Most Cheryls I know of are middle age.
Cheryl is a really pretty & sweet name for a girl! I love this name. :)
I was named Cheryl after a singer in the 50's... and yes I was born in the 50's. I am amazed by how many people spell the name Cherly... hate that! I can find Cheryl on various items in stores so no problems there! It does mean "beloved". I'm often called Carol... which I also hate. I wouldn't change my name to any other!
Cheryl is a gorgeous name that isn't overly common. I love the meaning - "beloved". Cher Bear could be a cute nickname. It can get misspelled easily. I love the real spelling though.
Cheryl is an okay name, I just don't see anything that great about it... but I don't see anything too bad about it either. (I just wouldn't wanna be named Cheryl).
I'm Cheryl Ann, born in 1980. My mother said that there was a TV show many years ago with a tug boat named the Cheryl Ann, and she always knew that's what she would name a girl if she had one. I have to love the name just because she gave it to me, but gotta admit I don't like the sound of it much, the "shh" sound at the beginning is not good for a girl, and the the "ull" sound at the end is not feminine. I love in the south too, and lots of people pronounce it 'shurull', which is awful. If you say it like "shairul", it's a little better. Combine this with the fact that no one seems to know how to spell it. I've seen people incorrectly write 'Cherly' my whole life, and why, I don't know. Take it from me, don't do this to your kid.
This name sounds really white trash to me. Probably because the one women I know with this name is a chain smoker who works at a junk yard and lives in a trailer park. Age is late 50s, so it sounds a bit dated as well. The spelling looks off to me, and the sounded is kind of rough. The names 'Michelle' and 'Siobhan' have the 'sh' sound but are... softer to me. Cheryl sounds like a type of rock.
Cheryl is a lovely name for a girl. It sounds really sweet and feminine. My daughter is called Cheryl and she is 2 years old and I do not think it sounds old fashioned like some people make it out to be. It is a very classy and beautiful name that can get shortened to 'Cher' or 'Cherie' which I really like.
My aunt's name is Cheryl, and like the Cheryl who posted earlier, she was born in 1968. However, unlike the other Cheryl, we're all from Chicago, so I wouldn't really call this an "east coast" name. While I couldn't picture my crazy aunt with any other name, I have to say that I'm fairly indifferent to the name by itself. It's not terrible, but it doesn't really do anything for me.
I feel indifferent to the name Cheryl, but I guess it's quite pretty.
In my opinion Cheryl sounds like a grandmas name. It also reminds me of the singer Cher who is quite old as well. I would not name my child this.
Really dated to me.
I'm Cheryl. My mother apparently named me after a college friend. Sorry to have to date myself in order to contribute to the history of the name, but I was born in 1968. I've been told it is an east-coast name. My mother is from Pennsylvania.I've never personally known anyone else with the name Cheryl. Some famous Cheryls are Cheryl Tiegs and Cheryl Ladd, both popular during the '70s.
I always start thinking of Chevy trucks when I read this name, besides it sounds like a bleach-blonde middle-aged woman from the south. Maybe it's that Chevrolet analogy.
