Meaning & History
Feminine form of Chion. In Greek mythology, she was the daughter of the naiad Callirrhoe and god of the Nile river Neilus. Zeus had Hermes turn her into a snow cloud and it's from this myth that it is believed that the Greek word khiōn (χιών) came to mean 'snow'. Another story has her as the daughter of the north wind Boreas and Orithyia, where she is a snow nymph or a minor goddess of snow.
