Call me crazy, but I'm not necessarily a fan of Clifford (Big Red Dog), Clifton (sounds a bit too much like I'm naming him after a town), or even Heathcliff, though that's probably my favorite of the three. But I love Cliff as a name by itself. It's short, simple, easy to pronounce even when he's little, and when he gets older, it has a bit of an edge to it. (No pun intended.) I love it!

Reminds me of a line from the 70's sitcom "Mork and Mindy." Mork: Goodbye, Cliff. I hope you fall off your name! Also the Big Red Dog.
No offense to anyone with this name, but for some reason this name reminds me of death. :/ Even though I have that weird connection with that name, I think it is a pretty okay name.
A lifeguard at my beach is named Cliff. I asked him what it's short for, and he said Clifford. He didn't want to be called the big red dog so NOBODY calls him Clifford.
On The Cosby Show this was used as short for Heathcliff.
