Cooper is an OK name. Plus many English names are first names (ex: Morgan, Evans, Madison) and a lot of human names are used for dogs,(ex:Max, Bailey).

Ugly, don’t do this to your child.

Could not see this on an adult. Also, someone pointed out that it rhymes with "pooper" and I'm sorry but I can't unhear it now. It's immature, but true.

It seems too common as a surname and I am not very keen on the coop sound. Something about it annoys me.

The name Cooper. This is a name that I have despised since I laid my eyes on anybody with that name. What kind of sicko freak would ever choose to live in a world with the name Cooper. Cooper is THE best name of all time. No other name can even compare. People who say Cooper the Pooper Scooper are immature and idiots. I personally would pick the name Cooper for my child 10 times out of 10. Only intelligent people are named Cooper.

I see no problem if Anglo Americans use surnames as given names, they have a shared connection and ancestry to a specific culture and people that use them. It's beautiful thing to do.

When I visited America I was astounded by the number of men with English surnames as first names. I find it interesting. There were names like Hudson, Carson, Grayson, Colton, Hunter, Jackson. I think some of them make quite handsome names but at the same time surnames are supposed to be inherited.

It's awkward to say. The "coop" sound just feels gross in my mouth. It makes me think "Cooper the super pooper".

I disagree with most of the comments. I like the name Cooper for a boy. It's cute and I think of someone successful and driven. I do not know any dogs named Cooper. Given how horrible the political climate is in the country (US) right now, I would rather name my son after an awesome dog over half the humans walking around. So if Cooper is a "dog's name", it is 1,000x better than many humans. Vote in for Cooper from me.

We just named our baby boy Cooper! It has special meaning in my husband's family. His parents had a dog named Cooper, who they named after their beloved longtime family doctor. So I can understand those who see it as a dog name, & also those who dislike it sounding like “pooper,” though I think that’s silly as it also rhymes with “trooper” & “super!” I believe it’s gaining in popularity; “Coop & Cami” is a current popular kids show on the Disney Channel (“Coop” being a nickname for the boy Cooper). I think it’s adorable, cool, & unique all at the same time!

This is my name. I've always thought of it as a weird name, but a good one. I've only met 4 or 5 other Coopers. Plus 3 or 4 dogs.

I absolutely hate the name Cooper, it is absolute garbage.

My son is named Cooper (born 2012) and we LOVE it! Sure, it sounded like a dog's name and we were first considering it for a middle name. But we decided it went better as a first name since we choose for his middle name (Gene) after my grandfather who recently died of Alzheimer's disease. They were so much alike and people who meet my son now say he looks just like his great-grandfather!
He occasionally meets that one dumb kid who rhymes his name with ”pooper” but, if that's the worst he gets, we tell him he's lucky! Most only call him Super Cooper. We like to call him Kupa Troopa like the character in the Mario games.

Ridiculous, unintelligent, and unpleasant-looking name. The spelling looks just as stupid as the pronunciation sounds. The only Coopers I have known have all been arrogant jerks. I'd even pick another surname-y name, like "Tucker" over this trash.

Even though I love the way it sounds (makes me think of the character from Twin Peaks) it has a weak, occupational meaning. Cooper is better suited for a housepet.

My name is Cooper and I am a female. I love my name. Yes, growing up was interesting and I have not always liked my name. As a girl growing up with the name it could get complicated. I would have people make comments like "No, what's your first name?" or "Oh, I thought you would be a boy." It would get frustrating as a kid. Also kids can be cruel. I would be called Cooper the Pooper Scooper! But let's face it. If it hadn't been my name it would have been something else my weight/hair/ clothes.. etc. As I get older I have learned to really accept and love my name. I have friends who have common names like Jennifer who hate that their names are common. So if you choose to name your kid Cooper, GREAT! Don't forget to tell them to Rock it, and be proud of it.

I actually first heard this name from amazing actor Bradley Cooper :) I think that this is the CUTEST name for a little boy and it would age quite well in my opinion.

This is the name of my dad's German Shepherd. His name was "Copper" when we adopted him, so we changed it slightly, but not enough to confuse the dog.

I agree with all the posters who said that Cooper is primarily a dog's name, not only because it sounds odd to me as a boy's first name, but because the numbers confirm it. In the United States, Cooper is the 12th most common name for male dogs, just behind Buster and Duke. As a boy's name, it's much farther down the list at #67, and it didn't break into the top 100 until 2004. In light of the numbers, it's not surprising that most people think of Cooper as a dog's name. I love dogs, so I'd get a chuckle if a couple named their sons Rover, Cooper, and Fido... but obviously that would be cruel, so please don't.

This name sounds surname-y and modern. No offense to anyone who has this name, but to me it just doesn't sound intelligent or dignified at all. Not only that, but it sounds like a dog's name! My name is Cooper, and I am a girl. I first started off hating my name because it was something different and I was made fun of. However the name now fits me, I love it! I was named for my grandfather (whom I never had the pleasure of meeting). My grandfather was well loved and for me to carry that name on is a blessing. I think the more interesting the name the better. As for being made fun of, it's easy to pick on someone even with the most common of names. Well, it is a cool nickname for a guy with the last name of Cooper. It's a bit surname-y as a first name, but it sounds pretty cool. The name is very massculine, and I find it ridiculous on any females, including tomboys and the masculine and androgynous women. I love the name Cooper. I especially love it for a girl, because in the series Circle of Three, one of the main characters name is Cooper, and she's a girl. Cooper Point is also the name of the street I live on.

Cooper is an awesome name for a boy. I just finished reading a book where one of the characters name was Cooper and it just stuck with me and I thought of what a cool name it is.

On a video game, a character's name is Sly Cooper, and Cooper is the last name. If you ask me, I would use this name as a middle name because your child will be made fun of if this is his first name. I know this because COOPER RHYMES WITH POOPER.
